Is Mega Charizard a dragon type? (Which Mega evolution for Charizard is Dragon-type?)
I have played Pokémon games since in the ‘90’s and many Pokémon trainers agree that Charizard evolved from Charmander. As much as it looks like a dragon and has dragon moves, the creators did not make it a dragon.
In Pokémon X and Y, Charizard turns into Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Charizard X takes on the dragon-type ability after the evolution.
These changes confused me; like many, I wondered if all Charizards were Dragon-type.
Let’s dig in and see if Mega Charizard is a Dragon-type and which Charizard becomes a Dragon-type.
Which Mega evolution for Charizard is Dragon type?
🐉During Mega Evolution, Mega Charizard X turns into a Fire-and Dragon-type. When battling in a Pokémon game and you want to Mega Evolve a Charizard, you can turn it into Charizard X, which is the Fire and Dragon type, or it can turn to Mega Charizard Y, which is a Fire and Flying type.
Charizard turns into a Dragon-type Charizard X when you tap on Charizardite X. This is the stage where it gains the Dragon-type looks and power together with the Fire-type ability.
Being a dragon type, Mega Charizard X gains a blue and black theme and wings. It also gains enhanced stats and extra abilities like the Tough Claws abilities when compared to a regular Charizard.
The Dragon-type Mega Evolution gives Charizard new strengths and weaknesses, making it a powerful force in battle.
Mega Charizard X resides in the Overused tier of competitive battle, and it is among the most threatening Pokémon in the battle. It is the Charizard that can run a Dragon Dance set.
🔥It is worth noting that Charizard is a Fire-Flying-type of Pokémon, and it resembles a dragon in its appearance and behavior.
However, it is not classified as a dragon-type Pokémon as the Pokémon company created it. Still, it is often associated with dragons because of its design and abilities.
When Mega Charizard X turns into a Dragon-type, it gets an added advantage over opponents, but this is not permanent since if Charizard were to be permanently a dragon, it would have lost the Ground Immunity.
That is why it returns to the usual Charizard after every battle.
The table below shows the strengths and weaknesses Mega Charizard X gains when it is a Dragon-type:
Type |
Fire and Dragon |
Attack Advantages |
Bug, Dragon, Grass, Ice and Steel |
Attack Disadvantages |
Fairy, Fire, Rock, and Water |
Defense Advantages |
Bug, Fire, Electric, Grass and steel |
Defense Disadvantages |
Dragon, Ground, and Rock |
Can all Charizards evolve into a dragon type?
🙅♀️During Mega Evolution, not all Charizards turn into the Dragon-type. Before Mega Evolving, Charizard was typically a fire-flying character.
However, during Mega Evolution, two Charizards are made; one of them becomes the Charizard X Fire and Dragon-type, and the other turns into Charizard Y Fire and Flying-type, which does not gain the Dragon type but maintains the original Charizard standards that the Pokémon company intended to maintain.
🕗Mega Charizard Y does not evolve into a Dragon-type when you select Charizardite Y. Mega Charizard Y maintains its original Fire-Flying typing and does not obtain the Dragon type.
Nevertheless, it gains an advantage in its stats, such as the Special Attack. Its looks, especially the flames, become bigger.
It is worth noting that the Dragon-type form is just special and not the standard evolution for Charizard. In addition, this Mega Evolution temporarily lasts for only eight hours, and then Charizard goes back to its natural form.
