What Is the Best Pokemon Crystal Starter? (Which Starter Should You Pick for Pokemon Crystal?)

Some of the best Pokémon Crystal Starters are Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. It’s been 15 years since I played Pokemon Crystal. Unlike my younger self, I decided to research my starter Pokemon.

I remember choosing Totodile the first time I played because it looked cool. This time, I went with Cyndaquil because of its impressive movesets.

Additionally, I built a team that my younger self would envy. The effort paid off, and I enjoyed every minute of this game.

Here are my two cents on the best starter for Pokemon Crystal.

Totodile

Totodile is a Water-type, crocodile-like Pokemon that evolves into Croconaw and eventually Feraligatr. Totodile’s stats are balanced, making it an all-rounder. However, it struggles against Grass-type Gym leaders.

Chikorita

Chikorita is a grass-type

Chikorita is a grass-type Pokemon that evolves into Bayleef at Level 16 and Meganium at Level 32. Its Defensive Stats make it perfect for battling Water-type Gym leaders.

However, being a Grass Pokemon, it’s weak against Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug, and Poison Pokemon.

Cyndaquil

Cyndaquil is a Fire-type

Cyndaquil is a Fire-type 🤓, mouse-like Pokemon that evolves into Quilava in Level 14 and Typhlosion in Level 36. It has decent Attack, Special Attack, and Speed, which are perfect for those with an offensive style.

Cyndaquil is strong against Grass-type Gym leaders but struggles against Water, Ground, and Rock- types.

What is the weakest starter in Pokemon Crystal?

Chikorita is considered the weakest starter in Pokemon Crystal because of its performance against the first two gym leaders 🧐. The first leader is Falkner in the Violet City Gym.

He specializes in Flying-type Pokemon.

To beat Falkner, Chikorita will need help from Geodude or Onix. In contrast, Totodile and Cyndaquil easily defeat Falkner’s Pokemon.

The second leader is Bugsy from the Azalea Town Gym. Bugsy specializes in Bug Pokemon, which Chikorita is weak against.

Again, Chikorita will need help.

The best team for Pokemon Crystal should balance offense and defense to give you the best chance of beating your opponents 🤓.

Additionally, your starter Pokemon sets the pace for your team.

Totodile

Totodile evolves into Feraligatr. As mentioned, it has decent attack and defense stats. However, it’s weak against Grass types.

First on this team would be Victreebel, a Grass / Poison Pokemon. Equip Victreebel with Cut, Razor Leaf, Sludge Bomb, and Sleep Powder.

Next, bring in Xatu, a Psychic / Flying-type Pokemon with decent special attack and speed stats. Equip it with Fly, Thief, Psychic, and Giga Drain.

You can also include Paras and Poliwag.

Cyndaquil

Cyndaquil evolves into Typhlosion

Cyndaquil evolves into Typhlosion, which you can equip with Flamethrower, Thunder Punch, and Dig. First, bring in Victreebel, then Poliwrath.

Equip Poliwrath with Surf, Waterfall, Whirlpool, and headbutt. Next, include Alakazam with Psychic, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch, and Reflect.

You can also add Fearow and Heracross.
