When I think of Volo, I like to think of ‘supervillain,’ but not everybody agrees. Most Pokémon fans I have interacted with find him a tad alarming and predictable, but his villain twist totally snuck up on me🤯.
What is undeniable, however, is that he gives the hardest battle in the game, and for that, I consider him one of the most interesting characters.
He has a pretty impressive team, so beating him might be a challenge unless you have all his tricks up your sleeve.
To do that, we’ll have to figure out his Pokémon, how best to beat him, and what happens once he is down. Read on to discover all about Volo’s team.
What Pokémon does Volo lead with?
Volo usually leads with Spiritomb, a purple ghost Pokémon with green orbs swirling around its face. It is weak only to fairy attacks.
It gives Volo a strong lead since it is resistant to poison, normal, fighting, and psychic moves. But not to worry; its limited weakness could give you the upper hand.
There are only a few fairy-type Pokémon, so you are certain of your choices for the first battle. You can use Clefable, Syveon, and Gardevoire to counter Spiritomb.
There is always the option to use a Pokémon familiar with Fairy-type moves, but it will be a costly choice if the Spiritomb eliminates it🙁.
What is the best Pokémon to counter Volo?
Countering Volo requires more than one Pokémon and a lot of strategy. With eight Pokémon in his team, you need to pick out your Pokémon depending on the weaknesses of his teammates.
In your team, you will need a fairy- and psychic-type Pokémon to beat Spiritomb, Garchomp, Lucario, and the two forms of Giratina after Volo falls.
A ghost type like Hisuian Typhlosion will come in handy to eliminate Togekiss, and a fire type and water type will beat Roserade and Hisuian Arcanine, respectively.
It is safer to have six Pokémon on your team. For the best team, each Pokémon you choose has to be able to exploit the weaknesses of Volo’s Pokémon💡.
You, therefore, need to know the strengths of Volo’s Pokémon and the type they are weak to.

How do you beat Volo?
The only way to beat Volo is to clear out all six of his Pokémon and the last two Giratinas. There isn’t a specific formula or Pokémon to use. The list of qualifying Pokémon is endless.
There are Togekiss, Mismagius, Honchcrow, Zoroark, and Umbreon, among others.
As long as the Pokémon you have possess the needed strengths, you are well on your way to an eliminated Volo.
You can use legendaries like Cresselia, in which case you might not need six Pokémon because its abilities top all of Volo’s team.
If you don’t have the correct Pokémon type, you should teach your Pokémon effective moves to increase your chances of winning.
What happens when you beat Volo?
Volo doesn’t go down easy. Once you have beaten all his Pokémon, he summons Giratina and uses it to fight you.
Your encounter with Giratina won’t be easy either; you will battle it in its alternate and original form.
Ursaluna and Togekiss are reliable at this point. Upon defeat, Giratina flees, and Volo lashes out😡. He gets riled up that Arceus chooses you over him and promises to conquer him even if it takes centuries.
Volo is a strong rival with a capable Pokémon team, but using a good strategy, he is easy to defeat.
