I get a lot of questions from confused newbies on the difference between a Charizard and a Dragonite. I get it – I was also confused the first time because they looked so much alike at first glance.
But if you look closely enough, you will notice some differences in their appearance.
And, if you do your research, you will learn that they are two distinct species.
❓Without taking much of your time, I’ll dive right into the question of the day – Why does Charizard and Dragonite look alike?
What is the relationship between Dragonite and Charizard?
🐉🥚The relationship between Dragonite and Charizard is that they belong to the same egg group – the Dragon egg group. Which is why they look alike in appearance and color.
There is, however, a slight difference between them. The Dragonite belongs to the European dragon type, while the Charizard is based on the Chinese dragon type.
Why do Dragonite and Charizard have the same color?
You might have noticed that the Charizard and Dragonite have the same color – an orange body with a pale-creamish color on their belly.
It is often assumed the similarity is a mere coincidence. Especially when you consider the fact that they are from different Pokémon generations and species.
What is the difference between Charizard and Dragonite?
One of the major differences, as highlighted previously, between the Charizard and Dragonite is that the Charizard is based on the Chinese dragon while the Dragonite is based on the European dragon.
Secondly, although they look so much alike, the Charizard and the Dragonite come from different species.
That is, the Charizard is a Fire and Flying type that evolves from the Charmander to Charmeleon and then to its final form, the Charizard, at level 36, while the Dragonite is a Dragon and Flying type that evolves from the Dratini to the Dragonair and to its final form the Dragonite at level 55.
🦖When it comes to appearance, you will notice that the Charizard looks more aggressive with its large wings and long tail, which has a fire flame at the tip.
On the other hand, the Dragonite looks more friendly with its chubby appearance and large round eyes.
Also, you can notice that the Dragonite has smaller wings in proportion to its body compared to Charizard, which has large wings protruding from the back of its shoulder blades.
🪽Another key difference between the two is their fighting abilities. The Charizard is well-known for its infamous fire attacks and unique flying moves.
The Dragonite, on the other hand, is known for its fire dragon-type moves. Also, the Dragonite is quite flexible since it can learn several other attack moves.
Lastly, Charizard is, by default, the more popular of the two due to its over-representation in media and the fact that it is a starter Pokémon.
