Two years ago, Niantic debuted the Daily Incense feature in Pokémon Go. I joined other trainers in trying it out, and it didn’t disappoint.
One night, it disappeared 😕.
I couldn’t find it on the map or item bag. Since it was late, I didn’t bother fixing it. When I checked the next day, it was back.
Curious, I went online to see if anyone reported this issue.
That’s when I learned that the problem can be due to unstable internet, using it without moving, and many other reasons.
Read on to find out more.
How does Daily Incense work in Pokémon Go?
The Daily Adventure Incense in Pokémon Go attracts wild Pokémon to your location as you move 🏃. You get one per day, and it lasts for 15 minutes.
During this window, you may find Pokémon that aren’t common in the wild.
However, the Daily Incense only works when you move. It’s worth noting that you can’t use another incense if the Daily Incense is active.
Likewise, you cannot use another Daily Incense if another is active.
Why is Daily Incense not working in Pokémon Go?
As mentioned, Daily Incense helps players find unique Pokémon in the wild. Unfortunately, this feature doesn’t always work, leaving players disappointed.
Although there isn’t a specific reason why this feature doesn’t work, some players have suggested the following 🤓:
- Failing to move: Pokémon Go’s features were designed with movement in mind. Therefore, using Daily Incense without moving may affect its functionality.
- Buggy game version: Niantic regularly updates the game and its features. As such, playing an older version may cause some features to glitch.
- Time of day: some players observe that some Pokémon are more common during certain times.
- Unstable Internet connection: having an unstable connection affects several aspects of the game, including this feature.
Additionally, having another Incense active, inaccurate or disabled GPS tracking, and a faulty device could affect the app.
How to fix Daily Incense not working in Pokémon Go?
Fixing Daily Incense depends on the problem. Here’s a table summarizing fixes for common issues associated with this feature 👇:

Faulty device |
Play on another device to isolate the issue. If indeed your device is faulty, repair or replace it. |
Issues with your game’s data |
Clear your game data and cache. Alternatively, force-stop the app, then relaunch your game. This may clear other underlying issues. |
Why is Daily Incense Gone from Pokémon Go?
Daily Incense disappears after 11:45 PM to prevent an overlap with incoming items. Remember, you can only use one Incense per day.
Therefore, Niantic has an internal failsafe to stop an overlap.
Does Daily Incense work if you walk around your house?
Yes. Movement is required for Daily Incense to work. However, this isn’t the same type of movement needed for hatching eggs.
Moving in circles works.
What Pokémon can you only catch with Daily Incense?
As mentioned, Daily Incense attracts rare Pokémon to your location. These include Absol, Galarian, Gengar, Gyarados, Hariyama, Lapras, and Nosepass.
Niantic frequently updates this list, so be on the lookout for others.
