The Pokémon games have been in existence for more than 20 years😀. In all those years, the different games have maintained a sense of similarity when it comes to the flow of the game, no matter the year it came out.
I find it really refreshing when I am able to know the flow in which the game is set but use different Pokémon and antagonists in the new editions.
This similarity has also caused some fans to question if all the games might just be the same.
It’s time to put these questions to rest as we find out the connection all the Pokémon games seem to have with one another.
Let’s dive in to find out if all the Pokémon games are the same. 💡
Are All Pokémon Games in The Same Universe?
The Pokémon games are not all set in the same universe. The games are set across a Multiverse. There have been many references in the game that have backed up the Multiverse theory for the Pokémon games. 🎮
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire made the confirmation of Pokémon games occurring in parallel universes.
The games that specifically remakes of other popular games were the ones that took place in a parallel universe of the original game.
The table below shows the games that mentioned the existence of an alternate universe:
Core Series Games |
Spin off Games |
Pokémon Black and White |
Pokémon Masters EX |
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet |
Are All Games Connected to Each Other?
Since the games are all set in the same Multiverse, all the Pokémon games share a slight connection.
Technically speaking, the Pokémon games are all sequels of each other, with some of the same characters appearing in different games. 🤯
Apart from having a slight connection of various characters appearing in multiple games, the Pokémon games differ when it comes to their storyline and lore.
Do You Have to Play Pokémon Games In Order?
You don’t have to play the Pokémon games in chronological order for you to enjoy them. Each game has its own interesting storyline and battles to choose from that are unique to it.
The stories for these games have no definite connection to each other that would require you to play them in order of the time they came out.
However, you can choose to play some of the older Pokémon games until you get to the recent ones out of nostalgia. The older games were timeless with their very own interesting Sprites graphics that are very different from the current 3D forms.
The games can be played out of curiosity to reminisce without turning it into an obligation to play the games in order. The Pokémon games can be enjoyed in whatever order the player chooses.
Why Are There Two Versions of The Same Game?
Every Pokémon fan knows most of the mainline games come in two different versions. The games have always come in two versions to encourage the spirit of Pokémon trading between players.
The two versions of the game are practically similar, with very few differences in their storyline. The games also take place in one region.
A player is meant to play one version of the game so that you can trade a different Pokémon with a friend playing the other version and add it to your Pokedex.
Trading Pokémon is one way you can complete your collection of Pokémon thus the creation of different versions of one game.
