I chose Chikorita as my Starter for Pokemon Silver; it was a nightmare 😱. Chikorita’s stats played well with my defensive style, but the Grass-type struggled against most gyms.
This experience taught me how to create a team to cover my Starter’s glaring weaknesses.
In hindsight, I’m grateful for what I learned, but if I could, I would choose another Starter, possibly Cyndaquil.
Here’s how to choose a Starter for Pokemon Silver.
How to choose the best Starter for Pokemon Silver
You can choose from three starters: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. Each has advantages and disadvantages throughout the game, which makes choosing one that much harder.
However, to choose a Starter Pokemon, consider its type, stats, and movesets. Additionally, it helps if you have a brief synopsis of the game.
Here are some tips to help you choose a Starter in Pokemon Silver 🧐.
Consider the Pokemon’s type.
The Pokemon’s type determines its strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Chikorita is a Grass-type Pokemon that’s strong against Water, Ground, and Rock Pokemon but weak against Fire, Ice, Poison, and flying-type Pokemon.
As such, it’s perfect for defeating Water-type Gym leaders, but will struggle against other types.
Check the base stats.
A Pokemon’s base stats determine how strong it is in battle. You may favor one stat over another, depending on your style. For instance, if you prefer speed, Cyndaquil is your guy, but if you prefer Attacks, pick Totodile.
Look at the moveset
Your Starter’s movesets determine which moves it can learn. For instance, Cyndaquil gains powerful Fire-type moves like Overheat and Eruption, making it ideal for players with an offensive style.

Chikorita
Chikorita is a grass type introduced in Generation 2. This dino-like Pokemon evolves into Bayleef at Level 16 and Meganium at Level 32.
It’s got impressive Defensive Stats, making it perfect for battles against Water-type Gym leaders. However, being a Grass Pokemon, it’s weak against Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug, and Poison Pokemon.
Cyndaquil
Cyndaquil is a Fire-type that debuted in Generation 2. This mouse-like Pokemon evolves into Quilava in Level 14 and Typhlosion in Level 36. Cyndaquil has decent Attack, Special Attack, and Speed, making it ideal for players who prefer an offensive style.
It’s perfect for battles against Grass-type Gym leaders but struggles against Water, Ground, and Rock- types.
Totodile
Totodile is a Water type introduced in Generation 2. This crocodile-like Pokemon evolves into Croconaw and eventually Feraligatr.
Totodile’s stats are balanced, making it an all-rounder. However, it struggles against Grass-type Gym leaders.
It’s worth noting that any of these is a decent Starter Pokemon. Consider how their moves and stats play with your style.
Additionally, assemble a team that covers your Starter’s weaknesses and you’ll be good 😃!
